Secretary General of the Jumhooree Party, Ahmed Sameer has said that the right to freedom of assembly is a right of every individual of Maldives granted by the constitution and therefore it cannot be violated regardless of one being from a party or not.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily following the meeting with the Elections Commission at their request, Sameer said that there is nothing that the Jumhooree Party can do because some of the top members of the party participating in the activities held against the government oppression regardless of the concerns of the Elections Commission.
Sameer said that the right to freedom of assembly and speech are basic rights granted to every citizen by the constitution. He said that no one can deprive any citizen of that regardless of him or her being in a particular party.
He said that the Jumhooree Party is not officially participating in the Mayday activities and this decision is not a reason for its members not participating in the activities.
“Any member can use his constitutional right to participate in the activities. There is nothing that the party can do. The party cannot obstruct them from it and deprive them of a basic right,” he said.
