President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has on Sunday, ratified the First Amendment Bill to the “Penal Code” (Act No. 9/2014).
The Amendment was passed by the Parliament at the 15th sitting of its first session, on 12th April 2015. Following ratification, the Act has been published in the Government Gazette.
At the Fifteenth Sitting of the First Session of the People’s Majlis held yesterday, two Bills on Amendment to the Penal Code (Act No. 09/2014) were passed with 43 votes in favour. There was one vote against and no abstentions.
The Bills were tabled by Ibrahim Riza, MP for Guraidhoo, on behalf of the Government; and Hon. Anara Naeem, MP for Makunudhoo.
The Committee Report on the two Bills was presented to the floor by Member of the Committee on National Security Hon. Jameel Usman, MP for Gemanafushi.
The First Hearing of the Bill tabled on behalf of the Government by Hon. Ibrahim Riza, MP for Guraidhoo, was held on 25 March 2015 at the Twelfth Sitting of the First Session of the Majlis. The First Hearing of the Bill tabled by Hon. Anara Naeem, MP for Makunudhoowas was held on 23 March 2015 at the Tenth Sitting of the First Sitting of the Majlis.
Both Bills were sent for Committee review on 30 March 2015 at the Thirteenth Sitting of the First Session of the Majlis.
