Secretary General of the Jumhooree Party, Ahmed Sameer has called the government not to try to change the fact that the people are the true leaders of the state in a democracy.
Sameer made this remark speaking at the public rally entitled “Maldivians against Tyranny.” He said that rulers are appointed to only represent the people and to protect the rights of the people and it is the people who are the true leaders of a government.
He said that the leaders are the servants of the people and their responsibility is to serve them and not oppress them.
Sameer said that the government has been trying to change this fact and they are trying to be more powerful than the people.
Addressing the Police, Sameer said that they should always remember that the constitution clearly obligates them to protect and serve the people. He said that the police should not take part in any oppression against the people.
He praised the Police for arresting a person who tried to break into the ranks of the protesters and cause unrest.
