Adhaalath Party has slammed the government for Maldives not voting against benefits for same sex couples working for the UN by backing a Russian-drafted resolution.
In a tweet, Adhaalath Party stated that it is a shame that Maldives did not participate in the vote.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon proposed the idea of for the UN to extend benefits to partners of gay employees. All Islamic countries except Maldives were among the 43 countries that voted on Tuesday against benefits for same sex couples working for the UN.
In an interview given to VNews, Adhaalath Party’s Secretary General Iyad Hameedh said that the Maldives failing to participate in the vote is a message given to the intentional community.
He said that the message is that the Maldivian government is not against Gay rights for the UN same sex couple employees.
“Muslim Maldivian people are ashamed of this state of the government,” he said.
