Family of Galolhu Dhekunu constituency MP Ahmed Mahloof has stated that he is being treated very badly in the prison cell.
Speaking with VNews on her return from Dhoonidhoo today after meeting Mahloof, his wife Nazra Naseem said, Mahloof is being treated very badly and in a very demeaning manner.
She said that despite the fact that Mahloof is a member of parliament, he is not being held in the jail win allocated for MPs, but in a small jail cell with iron bars.
“His jail cell does not even have a fan. The only thing in the cell is a mat for him to lie down on. There was nothing else in the cell. His whole body has been covered with mosquito bites. He is living in a difficult state”, Nazra said.
She said that although Mahloof has not been arrested for committing a major crime, he is being treated as if he was a convicted felon. She accused senior police officials of plotting this against Mahloof.
“To feed him, they throw his plate into the cell. This is not how they should act, is it? Mahloof is not a dangerous criminal”, Nazra said.
Nazra said that, when she went to meet Mahloof with their child at 01:00 today, they were allowed to meet him for an hour. She however added that she was not allowed to give Mahloof, some food that she took for him.
“Police said that they are not sure if the food was good food. Then I said that I will also eat it with Mahloof and that I too, would not put poison in the food I have brought to give to my husband. But they insisted that they cannot be sure, and did not allow me to give him the food”, said Nazra.
She added that a document has been pasted on the cell stating that Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives, Ahmed Tholaal, will not be given the opportunity to meet with Mahloof. She urged a team from HRCM therefore, to travel to Dhoonidhoo, to check on his situation. (Source: Vmedia)
