Former Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis, current MP for Henveiru Hulhangu constituency, Abdulla Shahid has said that Maldives needs a perfect Parliamentary System of government and the people should think about it and work for it.
Abdulla Shahid made this remark in an interview to VTV. Answering a question asked by Miadhu Daily in view of this remark, Shahid said that the parliamentary system should be a system that is similar to that which is practiced in other countries.
In this regard, there should be chance to cause undue influence on votes and there should be a system that will remove any member who changes their party after being elected via the party line. He said that there party switching because it is not restricted now.
Shahid said that no person should be removed from his or her post because of a statement or a difference of opinion. He said that this should be stopped although this has been the tradition in Maldives.
Shahid noted that the judges of Maldives were under intimidation up until the Green Constitution was passed. “Therefore they had not independence to judge impartially,” he said.
He said that the August 12 and 13 showed that if the people want a change no one can withhold that change. However, he said that the government then believed that they can withhold the change.
