Abdulla Riyaz calls to give ACC the power to stop corruption
Kinbidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Riyaz has called to amend the Anti-Corruption Act and give Anti-Corruption Commission the power to stop corruption.

MP Abdulla Riyaz made this remark speaking at the plenary debate which was carried out for the Bill on Amendment to the Anti-Corruption Act, submitted on behalf of the Government by Asma Rasheed, MP for Maafannu-Central constituency.

He said that it is worrying that the government sent only one amendment to the Anti-Corruption Act at a time when corruption is rampant and the Anti-Corruption Commission is unable to fulfill their responsibilities fully.

“ACC should have the authority to stop corruption and to implement the Act. However this has been very much narrowed done in reality. This is very saddening. Therefore, these should be noted and these should be included among the amendments,” he said.

Abdulla Riyaz also said that it is very important to provide the members of Anti-Corruption Commission their job security and providing them with independence from all such threats.

A total of 24 MPs spoke during yesterday’s allocated time.

The First Reading of the Bill on Amendment to the Anti-Corruption Act was held on 17 June 2014, at the Third Sitting of the Second Session.
