President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that according to Islam no decision should be taken without Shura, mutual consultation.
He made the statement at the inauguration of the “Youth Leaders’ Network”, which was held on Wednesday at the President’s Office.
The President said that even in the most difficult times everything should be decided through Shura.
“In a representative democracy every issue should be resolved through mutual discussion. In every issue except that which is already stipulated in a way by law have to be discussed,” he said.
He said that this is how things are done in a representative democracy. He said that however today in Maldives what is witnessed is that holes are being made in various aspects.
He said that all political leaders talk of stability and peace in the Maldives. He said that this is something good.
“We also speak about the beautiful issues mentioned in text books,” he said.
However, the President said that the irony is that many of them after making such remarks resort to calling for boycott of tourists to Maldives and other such calls.
He said that this is a paradox. “In one side a call to build responsible citizens is made. A call to create a peaceful society is made. A call to respect the rights of others is made. However at the same time, the rights are described as something that has to be got from the streets in whatever way possible. This is not how it should be done,” he said.
The President stressed that if there is no respect to the current systems, then the Maldives may end up back to the dreadful systems which were enforced in the sixties. He also emphasized that not everything can be resolved on the streets with brute force, thus noting of the importance of resolving a case through a proper system.
