JP notifies public regarding unjust actions of govt to oppress Gasim Ibrahim

Jumhooree Party has issued a statement notifying the public regarding the unjust actions of the government of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom against the Jumhooree Party leader and Maamigili constituency MP Gasim Ibrahim.

Jumhooree Party noted that the government has been slandering Gasim Ibrahim with various false accusations and reversing his businesses.

The party stated that the allegations of PPM Deputy Leader Ahmed Adheeb on Raajjemiadhu program aired on TVM last Monday that Gasim Ibrahim is trying to take the oath of Presidency on February 27 at the joint mass gathering organized by MDP and the Jumhooree Party has no basis whatsoever.

Jumhooree Party noted that the party has been aware of that this particular accusation is currently being spread in the social media by PPM to change the perception of the public regarding the mass symposium to be held on February 27.

The party called the government and all responsible authorities to stop using such dirty political tactics to assassinate the character of Gasim Ibrahim and tarnish the sincere motive of the campaign of Jumhooree Party and MDP to defend the constitution.

Jumhooree Party stated that they have been informed of the claim of Tourism Minister Adheeb that Gasim Ibrahim’s business interests owes more than 127 million US dollars to the government as taxes, leases and fines. The party also stated that they are aware of the threat made by Adheeb that the government will freeze the accounts of these businesses if that amount is not paid when Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) demands the payment. Jumhooree Party stated that Gasim Ibrahim is a recipient of MIRA’s “Golden Coin” in 2014, which is given to those businesses that do not default on payments to the state, and for those who garner the most income to the state. The party noted that there are no undue payments to MIRA by any of the businesses of Gasim Ibrahim.

Jumhooree Party stated that in fact, advance payments made by Gasim’s companies have been withheld by the state for no reason while Adheeb makes baseless accusations in the name of the government. The party also stated that the lagoons released as compensation, for which Gasim’s companies made advance payments, have now been sequestered unjustly by the state.

Jumhooree Party called on the board of MIRA to refrain from giving into political pressure and called on the board to be steadfast in opposing such fraudulent and immoral commands by the government.

The party stated that they are well informed of the tactics of the current government to assassinate the character of political leaders including Former Defence Minister Colonel (retired) Mohamed Nazim by framing him and his wife of possessing illegal weapons and also trying to frame others political leaders along with him.

In this regard, Jumhooree Party stated that the party has been informed that the government is coercing the current Prosecutor General to prosecute former Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz on the claims of assisting Colonel Mohamed Nazim in a coup de’tat using illegal weaponry and also Gasim Ibrahim on the allegations of planning to hide terrorists at Paradise Island Resort.

Jumhooree Party stated that the actions of the government to assassinate the character of political opponents and framing them to remove them from the political arena are the same dirty tactics used by despotic and dictatorial governments.

The party noted that the only way to make the government accountable for these actions is the public voicing out against the injustices and oppression of the government and make the government answerable to the public at all times. The party stated that the officials of the government, the judiciary and the members of the Peoples’ Majlis should be reminded of their constitutional responsibilities and also regarding the oaths that they took in the name of Allah for which they will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment.

In this regard, Jumhooree Party appealed all responsible authorities to fear Allah and be sincere and honest in taking and upholding their responsibilities without being unjust to anyone. The party reminded them that the whole nation might have to face the bitter consequences of their actions if they continue their oppressive tyranny against the people.

Jumhooree Party reiterated that there is no truth to the slanders made against Gasim Ibrahim by the current government.
