Jumhooree Party and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have held discussions regarding the breaches of the constitution by the current government.
Speaking to the media, Male’ Mayor Mohamed Shihab said that the joint commission of JP and MDP submitted a report the breaches of the constitution by the current government. He said that yesterday’s meeting of the commission was regarding the findings of that report.
Kendhoo constituency MP Ali Hussein said that the legal team of the commission noted the government’s influence on the judiciary and the importance of making the judiciary independent of undue influence, In this regard two issues were identified and decided to be submitted to the court.
Ali Hussein said that the first issue is the issue of the high court bench being divided into three groups and making three branches of the high court.
“This was done by amending the court act. However, we believe that the amendment is clearly against the constitution,” he said.
Ali Hussein said that they will do everything they can to make the high court independent of the influences of the government.
