Maldives Trade Union (MTU) has stated that the government should first protect local investments as a first priority before bringing foreign investments to Maldives.
Speaking at Fasmanzaru of VTV, the member of the Union, Saudullah said that foreign investors need investment protection guarantee when the government boasts of bringing more foreign investors.
He said that the government should protect local investments to ascertain this. However, he said that the government has not been very successful so far.
Saud said that one of the biggest local investor, Villa Group investments are being harassed and obstructed by the government. He said that this happens whenever the founder of Villa Group, Gasim Ibrahim is at odds with the policies of the government.
Saud said that this is not how things should go. He said that a foreign investment also might come through an opposition party. He said that there is the risk that the government might annul such an investment whenever they want.
In addition to this, Saud said that the harm done to the investments of Gasim Ibrahim is harm done to all the people of Maldives.
Saud called the government to stop oppressing the people and to rule giving equal rights to all.
