A top official of the United Nations (UN) has condemned the government for worsening the state of Maldives.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily from Washington, the official stated that if the government wants stability in the Maldives then they won’t be acting in the same manner as they currently doing.
The UN official stated that having a majority in the Peoples’ Majlis for the government is a reason to establish peace and prosperity in the country however the Maldivian government is using it for their own political motives.
“For example the next Presidential election will be held in 2018. However why is the government trying to hinder the opposition candidates from running for Presidency by bringing changes to the constitution? Perhaps they do not understand the importance of the opposition. However this is not correct. President Yameen has only the support of 30 percent of the people. More than 70 percent of the people do not support him,” the official said.
Regarding the unrest in the streets of Male’, the UN official said that Maldives does not need such turmoil however if the government is stifling opposition then to witness such reaction is imminent.
Furthermore, the UN official stated that the UN and other international organizations are monitoring the state of Maldives very closely.
