Water and Sewerage systems project commenced in Thurakunu
Works commenced for the establishment of Water and Sewerage System in Haa Alifu Atoll Thuraakunu Island. Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim inaugurated the ceremony. In this ceremony, Member of Parliament of Hoarafushi constituency Honorable Mohamed Ismail, Parliament member of Noonu atoll Kendikulhudhoo, Mr. Ali Mauroof, Founder Member of Alifulhu Foundation, Mr. Mohamed Abdul Sattar ,President of Thuraakunu Council Mr. Ali Abdul Latheef and some members of Thuraakunu Council have participated.

This project is fully funded by Alifulhu Thuhthu (AFT) Foundation in cooperation with the island council and the government.

Establishment of Sanitation Facility in Thuraakunu island is carried out by Altec Maldives Pvt Ltd (MWSC), under a design and build contract signed on 09thJune 2014.
The project includes laying down sewerage pipes, establishing Sewage pump stations and establishing sea outfall system. Also this project includes establishment of storage tanks, Administrative building, Rainwater Storage Tanks & water network and is scheduled to be completed in April 2016 for sewerage project and October 2015 for Water Project. This project would provide safe water and proper sanitation facilities for the people of Thuraakunu island.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim said that this is the first project which is carried out with the assistance of an independent company and expressed his gratitude to AFT Foundation and the council. He also encouraged other independent parties to take initiative for the projects which would bring development to the islands. Also in this ceremony, a shield was awarded to AFTF by the people of the island. In this ceremony, the council of Thuraakunu has also endorsed the campaign ‘It’s Cool at 25’ which was started on Energy Day 2014.
