Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that global warming is one of the biggest problems faced by island nations.
The Former President Gayoom made this remark speaking at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit hosted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
Gayoom said that in the past twenty years the issue has become much worse than previously estimated.
He said that the average temperature recorded in the Maldives rose by 0.6 Celsius degrees between 1975 to 2014. He also added that the records show that sea levels had risen by 0.6 millimeters within the last 20 years.
The former President said that many environmental changes which were not present when the Millennium Development Goals were set are witnessed today,
Gayoom said that the small island states are very concerned and worried.
