Leader of the Jumhooree Party, Gasim Ibrahim has said that the rights granted by the constitution are being violated one by one.
Speaking to the media lastnight at the Jumhooree Maalam at M. Kunooz, Gasim Ibrahim said that the most important aspect of the constitution is the preservation of the rights of the people. Therefore, the constitution calls for the principle of check and balance, demarcation of the three powers of state and independency of institutions.
Gasim said that the preservation of the constitution means that the rights granted by the constitution are granted without any restriction. He said that the people should not be deprived of those rights whenever the government wants to withhold them.
The leader of the Jumhooree Party further stated that the constitution also clearly mentions what to be done to those who betray the people and violate the constitution while in responsible positions. However, he said that this is disregarded today.
“Today what we are seeing is restricting everything to a people. Restricting to only one party. Jobs are also restricted except to members of one party. Others are deprived of their rights. However, that party does not even have 40000 people. The population of Maldives is greater than three lakhs. Therefore this is not fair, right?,” he asked.
