Secretary General of the Jumhooree Party, Ahmed Sameer has said that if the government or the current President is garnering more support then there is no plausible reason to restrict the right of candidacy for others.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Sameer said that no one will believe if the ruling party restricts the right of candidacy for others then claim that they have garnered a lot of support so much so that their opponents are envious of it.
Sameer said that perhaps the restriction put on the candidacy by trying to pass a maximum age limit for Presidential candidates might not be the idea of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
“Perhaps it might be by those who claim to support him but yet want to put the blame on him. It might be that they are trying to preserve their rulership to remain taking undue benefit from the state”
“Nevertheless, what they are doing is against the spirit of democracy. This is known by all people,” he said.
Sameer said that the people will not accept when the ruling party tries to restrict the candidacy to candidates with a particular letter twice in their name.
