Human Right Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has stated that there are no practical action taken by the authorities to the stop child abuse although there has been lots of talks regarding the matter.
The commission stated that every time there comes a tragic case all consider strengthening the institutions of the state however it is forgotten with time. The commission said that this should be thought about and practical action should be taken to prevent these tragedies.
HRCM stated that it is important to establish a mechanism to identify victims of child abuse. “It is not correct to just claim that there is no means to stop these cases. These claims are not excuses,” the commission stated.
In addition to this, HRCM stated that they are looking into the case of the 3 year old boy named Mohamed Ibthihaal, who was found dead in V. Rakeedhoo with serious injuries on his body.
The commission stated that the government was informed that the child was being abused by his mother but the state institution did not take the necessary steps to prevent the child from being abused which resulted in this tragedy.
HRCM has said that they are currently investigating the issue in a human rights perspective, but have not given any further details.
