Deputy Leader of the Jumhooree Party, Dr. Hussein Rasheed has said that the campaign started by the Jumhooree Party to defend and protect the constitution is not conducted to promote a certain party but only to promote and preserve the constitutional rights of the people.
Dr. Hussein Rasheed said that the green constitution came into existence with the pioneer work and sacrifices of many people including the leader of the Jumhooree Party, Gasim Ibrahim who was the Speaker of the Special Majlis during that time.
He said that the constitution grants many of the rights of the people and clearly stipulates how the state should be run.
“The constitution obligates the appointment of an independent Attorney General. However we do not have an Attorney General today. We only have a minister. The Minister takes the responsibilities of the Attorney General. This is clearly not what the constitution calls for,” he said.
Dr. Hussein Rasheed said that the Attorney General is the government's independent chief legal advisor, and its primary lawyer. He said that he cannot believe that a minister can fully take this responsibility while also managing a whole ministry.
The Deputy Leader of the Jumhooree Party further said that the current government is doing many such things which are clearly in opposition to the constitution.
