Vice President joins Commonwealth leaders at opening of 28th CHOGM

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has attended the opening ceremony of the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), held in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

The ceremony was attended by King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, along with heads of government and representatives of member countries gathered for the four-day summit.

The opening programme included speeches by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and the Commonwealth Secretary-General, followed by cultural performances celebrating the host country. The Vice President also joined other leaders and delegation representatives for the official group photograph.

Taking place from 1 to 4 November 2026, the summit brings together leaders of the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries to discuss shared challenges, strengthen cooperation and set priorities for the organisation’s future.

CHOGM is held every two years and serves as the Commonwealth’s highest-level political gathering. It provides an opportunity for leaders to exchange views on international and regional developments, coordinate approaches to common concerns and explore areas for closer cooperation.

This year’s meeting is being held under the theme, “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth”, with discussions focusing on strengthening partnerships and mobilising investment to support sustainable development and shared prosperity across member states.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of independent countries with historical links and shared values. Its members work together on issues including economic development, climate change, democracy, education and international cooperation. The organisation provides a platform for countries of different sizes and levels of development to engage on matters of mutual interest.
