President Muizzu Embarks on State Visit to Pakistan to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday for a state visit at the invitation of Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.

The visit, scheduled to continue until 22 October, will include meetings with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Sharif and other senior government officials. According to the President’s Office, President Muizzu will also hold official discussions with the Pakistani prime minister to explore ways to further strengthen relations between the two countries.

Following the high-level talks, the two leaders are expected to witness the exchange of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering various areas of cooperation, aimed at expanding bilateral engagement and strengthening ties between the Maldives and Pakistan.

The visit is a significant milestone in bilateral relations, marking the first visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in a decade. It also coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which were formally established on 26 July 1966.

President Muizzu’s foreign policy is guided by the principle of “Maldives First”, which emphasises strengthening ties with neighboring countries and maintaining active engagement with the international community. The policy seeks to build partnerships that contribute to the Maldives’ development and national progress.

The President is accompanied on the visit by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Cabinet ministers and senior government officials, the President’s Office stated.
