Saeed Urges Opposition to Keep Political Disputes from Discouraging Foreign Investors

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has called on opposition groups to refrain from politicising foreign investment, warning that misinformation and campaigns targeting prospective investors could undermine opportunities for economic growth in the Maldives.

In a social media post responding to reports published by a news outlet, Minister Saeed stressed that political differences should not be allowed to jeopardise investment prospects that could create economic opportunities and benefits for Maldivian citizens.

He urged opposition movements to stop targeting potential investors through intimidation and misleading claims, emphasising the importance of safeguarding the country’s reputation as an investment destination.

The Minister cautioned that spreading false information and creating hostility towards investors could ultimately benefit competing destinations seeking to attract international business. He described such misinformation as “music to their ears”, highlighting the potential damage that negative campaigns could inflict on the Maldives’ competitiveness in the global investment market.

Addressing the country's economic priorities, Saeed reiterated that tourism remains the backbone of the Maldivian economy. He noted that the industry continues to evolve in response to changing international travel patterns and market trends, stressing that hostility, falsehoods and jealousy would not help build a successful tourism sector.

The Minister also underscored the importance of upholding the country's legal framework, stating that Maldivian laws govern activities within the nation and that actions contrary to the Constitution would not be permitted. He called on those circulating allegations to verify the facts rather than fuel misinformation and hostility.

The Government has made attracting foreign investment a key part of its economic development strategy, with several major projects under way and further developments being planned.

Among the initiatives is the Sustainable Township Project in Noonu Atoll, alongside the proposed Rasmalé development, which the Government is preparing to launch. Both projects form part of broader efforts to expand development and attract investment into the country.

However, these large-scale developments have prompted debate among political groups and members of the public, with differing views emerging over their implications and implementation.

Minister Saeed’s remarks come amid continuing discussions over the role of foreign investment in the Maldives’ economic future, as the Government seeks to advance major development projects while encouraging investor confidence.
