Both sides agree to provide assistance and cooperation in various areas

The Maldives and Russia have signed an agreement to strengthen legal cooperation between the two countries.

Prosecutor General Justice (Retired) Uz. Abbas Shareef and a delegation from the Prosecutor General’s Office are currently in Kazan, Russia, to participate in the 24th Meeting of Prosecutors General of the Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

On the sidelines of the meeting, Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef held official discussions with Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Aleksandr Gutsan. Following the discussions, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Maldives and the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia signed an Agreement on Cooperation aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two institutions.

Under the agreement, the two offices will establish a framework for professional research, training, and the exchange of knowledge and experience. The agreement also provides for cooperation and assistance in various areas mutually agreed upon by both sides.

Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef said that during the official discussions between the two countries, information would also be shared about the “PGO 2.0” initiative being implemented by the Prosecutor General’s Office, which aims to increase the efficiency of the office’s operations by more than 60 percent.

He said that although the system is designed to accelerate work processes, its fundamental principle is to ensure that decision-making authority remains in human hands.

The Prosecutor General also expressed his appreciation to Russian Prosecutor General Aleksandr Gutsan for the warm hospitality extended to the Maldivian delegation. He said he hoped that relations between the two offices would continue to strengthen in the future.

In a post on social media, Prosecutor General Abbas said it was an honour to have the opportunity to meet with Russian Prosecutor General Aleksandr Gutsan in Kazan and sign an agreement to strengthen legal cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office of Maldives and its Russian counterpart.

He said the agreement would strengthen legal cooperation between the two offices in combating cross-border crimes and facilitate greater collaboration in additional areas.

The agreement provides a framework for professional research and training, the exchange of knowledge and experience, and cooperation and assistance in areas mutually agreed upon by the two offices.

The 24th Meeting of Prosecutors General of the SCO Member States is scheduled to take place in Kazan on October 1, 2026.
