Maldives showcases unique tourism appeal at Arabian Travel Market

The Maldives made a strong impression at this year’s Arabian Travel Market (ATM), using the major Middle Eastern tourism exhibition to promote its distinctive island setting, luxury tourism products and cultural experiences to international industry representatives.

The Maldives presented a 517-square-metre exhibition stand designed to give visitors an immersive experience of the country’s marine environment. The display incorporated three-dimensional images and digital screens showcasing the Maldives’ lagoons, islands and natural surroundings.

Visitors were also able to experience elements of Maldivian culture and sample a selection of light foods traditionally enjoyed in the Maldives.

The country’s unique geographical character was a key feature of the presentation. Unlike conventional destinations connected by continuous land, the Maldives is made up of hundreds of individual islands, offering a tourism experience centred around its marine environment, beaches and resort islands.

The Arabian Travel Market, now in its 32nd year, is regarded as the largest tourism trade exhibition in the Middle East and brings together tourism professionals and businesses from across international markets.

Maldivian resorts, airlines, tour operators and other tourism-related businesses used the four-day event to establish and strengthen commercial partnerships, hold business meetings and explore new opportunities in key international markets.

A total of 165 representatives from 74 Maldivian companies took part in this year’s ATM, including businesses that have participated in the event for nearly two decades.

Tourism industry representatives who spoke to PSM News described the event as an important platform for promoting the Maldives, particularly among the Middle Eastern travel market.

One resort industry operator said ATM is among the most beneficial international tourism fairs for the company, alongside the Maldives’ own TTM exhibition. The operator noted that the relatively easy access to the event and its timing ahead of the peak tourism season make it particularly valuable for the business.

Despite the prevailing situation in parts of the Middle East, the operator said the outcomes from this year’s event exceeded expectations.

ATM provides a platform for tourism companies, airlines and other industry stakeholders to establish partnerships and pursue mutually beneficial business opportunities. During this year’s exhibition, Maldivian participants held numerous meetings and signed agreements with two airlines.

The Maldives’ participation was also aimed at strengthening strategic partnerships and generating business opportunities that could contribute to the upcoming high season.

Government officials and tourism stakeholders expect the relationships and agreements developed during the exhibition to translate into increased business and further opportunities for the Maldivian tourism industry in the months ahead.
