The Maldives has established a robust cybersecurity framework capable of supporting international financial technology platforms, including PayPal, as the country accelerates its digital transformation agenda, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan has said.
Speaking on the “Trade Desk” podcast, Minister Ihusaan highlighted cybersecurity as a key pillar of the government's "Maldives 2.0" initiative, stressing that the protection of digital infrastructure is essential as the nation embraces new financial technologies and expands its digital economy.
According to the Minister, the legislative framework required to implement the Maldives 2.0 vision has already been put in place, while several specialised institutions have been established to safeguard the country's digital ecosystem.
These include the Cybersecurity Agency, the National Cyber Operations Centre, and a dedicated Security Operations Centre within the Maldives Police Service. Minister Ihusaan said all of these entities are now fully operational and equipped to provide comprehensive cybersecurity support at the national level.
He noted that the government has taken proactive measures to ensure the Maldives is prepared to meet the security requirements of global fintech providers seeking to operate in the country.
“The Ministry and its affiliated agencies are now ready to deliver the necessary cybersecurity services at the national level and provide immediate assistance whenever required,” he said.
The Minister further revealed that stringent security standards have been introduced for network solution providers, telecommunications operators and fintech companies. These entities will be subject to regular audits and compliance assessments to ensure adherence to national cybersecurity protocols and international best practices.
The enhanced cybersecurity framework comes as the Maldives enters a new phase of digital development following the introduction of PayPal services to the country, a move expected to create greater opportunities for entrepreneurs, freelancers, small businesses and content creators to access global markets.
Minister Ihusaan said maintaining a secure and trusted digital environment is fundamental to encouraging innovation, attracting international technology partners and fostering sustainable growth within the digital economy.
He also encouraged young Maldivians to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the digital sector, noting that stronger cybersecurity capabilities will provide the confidence and protection needed for businesses and individuals to operate safely in an increasingly connected world.
As the Maldives advances its ambitions of becoming a regional digital leader, the government says strengthening cyber resilience will remain a central priority, ensuring that innovation and economic growth are supported by a secure and reliable technological foundation.
