A newly developed beach area in Baa Atoll Eydhafushi, named “Veshi Fannu”, has been officially opened for public use.
The project, developed by the Eydhafushi Council, includes a designated swimming area as well as a dedicated relaxation space for residents and visitors.
Veshi Fannu was officially inaugurated on Saturday by Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, Deputy Managing Director of MTCC, and Eydhafushi Council President Mohamed Fathihu.
Speaking to PSM, Council President Mohamed Fathihu stated that the project, carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), cost approximately MVR 5 million.
He explained that following the island’s land reclamation project in 2014, Eydhafushi had lacked a proper and safe area for swimming and recreational beach activities. According to Fathihu, the newly developed facility now provides a convenient and accessible space for people of all ages, particularly senior citizens.
Fathihu further noted that the development of a swimming area had been included in the island’s original land use plan following the reclamation project. He added that the beach has already seen strong public use since its opening.
As part of the project, an area measuring 15,919 cubic metres was dredged to create the swimming zone. In addition, 160 metres of geo-bag revetment was installed, along with approximately 60 to 70 metres of shoreline protection structures using groynes and large rock boulders.
