Thousands join May Day rally across Maldives

Thousands of employees from government institutions and private companies took part in a large rally held on Friday to mark International Workers’ Day, with ministers and workers gathering to highlight the importance of labour rights and worker welfare in the Maldives.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Skills Development, brought together workers from across different sectors in a show of solidarity and appreciation for the nation’s workforce.

Addressing the gathering, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Skills Development Ali Ihusaan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending the exploitation of expatriate workers and creating a more equitable working environment for all employees in the country.

Speaking to participants from various industries, the minister said protecting the safety, rights, and wellbeing of both Maldivian and foreign workers remains a key priority of the administration. He noted that the government is actively working to identify long-standing labour issues and introduce practical, comprehensive solutions.

“The government is working hard to prevent the exploitation of foreign workers in the Maldives. At the same time, ensuring a better working environment for the people of the Maldives is also an important objective,” he said.

Minister Ihusaan further stated that the administration is focused on creating more employment opportunities for Maldivians while also addressing the challenges faced by workers across all sectors. He added that Workers’ Day serves as an important reminder of the immense contribution made by workers towards national development.

Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed also addressed the rally, highlighting measures already introduced by the government to strengthen worker protections and improve welfare.

He said worker wellbeing is being prioritised in national policymaking, noting that efforts are being made to respond directly to the concerns and needs of employees. The minister further revealed that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to provide housing near resorts for tourism employees living away from their families.

Speaking on the fisheries sector, Minister Saeed pointed to the introduction of immediate payments for fish purchases, describing the move as part of the government’s efforts to recognise and value the contribution of fishermen. He also noted that work is underway to harmonise salary structures between civil service employees and workers in other sectors.

According to the minister, labour rights and economic development are closely linked, adding that the government will continue efforts to strengthen protections and modernise facilities for workers nationwide.

Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed also paid tribute to the country’s workforce, describing the contribution of workers as “invaluable.”

She stated that every individual contributing to the Maldives’ economic, infrastructural, and social progress plays a vital role in national development and affirmed the government’s continued commitment to prioritising worker welfare.

“Everyone who works is doing an important service to the country. An invaluable service,” she said.

Minister Heena further described workers as the “backbone” and “engine” of the nation, noting that the purpose of Workers’ Day is to honour and express gratitude for their dedication and hard work.

The three ministers made the remarks during exclusive interviews with state broadcaster PSM.

Observed globally on May 1 each year, Workers’ Day recognises the contribution of workers while also drawing attention to labour rights, workplace safety, and employee welfare. The large turnout at Friday’s rally reflected the spirit of unity and appreciation surrounding the occasion in the Maldives.
