Maldives Welcomes Over 500,000 Tourists as Global Appeal Remains Strong

The Maldives has recorded more than 500,000 tourist arrivals so far this year, reflecting continued global demand for the island destination.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, a total of 502,252 tourists visited the Maldives as of 4 March, marking an 8.8 percent increase compared to the 461,839 arrivals recorded during the same period last year.

China currently ranks as the largest source market with 79,681 visitors, followed by Russia with 57,466 tourists and Italy with 48,417 arrivals. The United Kingdom recorded 46,005 visitors, while Germany placed fifth with 31,344 tourists.

Most visitors chose to stay at resorts, with 336,570 tourists opting for resort accommodation. Meanwhile, 131,261 travellers stayed in guesthouses across local islands.

Despite the strong overall figures, the Ministry noted that the average daily tourist arrivals have recently declined due to flight cancellations from several source markets caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Authorities are working to address the situation by resuming suspended routes and exploring alternative flight connections from other destinations.

The Maldives’ enduring appeal was also evident at ITB Berlin 2026, one of the world’s largest travel trade fairs, where the country drew significant attention from travel professionals and visitors alike.

Maldives Ambassador to Germany Aishath Shaan Shakir said the country’s reputation often precedes any formal introduction. She noted that many people she meets in Germany immediately share their own experiences of visiting the Maldives, frequently describing it as an exceptionally beautiful and memorable destination. In one instance, she recalled meeting a traveller who had visited the Maldives 45 times and was already planning another trip.

Similar sentiments were echoed by visitors attending the tourism fair. Many travellers praised the Maldives for its pristine beaches, clear turquoise waters and relaxing atmosphere. One German visitor described the destination as breathtaking and said they were already planning a return trip to celebrate a special anniversary.

International visitors also highlighted the wide range of experiences available in the Maldives, from peaceful relaxation to water sports and other recreational activities, noting that the islands offer something for every type of traveller.

Frequent travellers also pointed to the warmth and hospitality of Maldivian people as a key part of the experience. One German tourist who has travelled to more than 60 countries remarked that the Maldives remains unmatched, praising both the natural beauty of the islands and the welcoming nature of local staff.

Together, the strong arrival figures and positive feedback from travellers underline the Maldives’ continued status as one of the world’s most sought-after holiday destinations, often described as a true tropical paradise.
