Maldivian authorities have rolled out a series of emergency measures to assist travellers affected by widespread flight cancellations linked to unrest in the Middle East, including temporary visa extensions and on-the-ground airport support.
Maldives Immigration confirmed that tourist visas will be extended for visitors unable to depart before their permits expire due to cancelled flights. Since 28 February, multiple services operating to and from the Maldives have been suspended following airspace closures across parts of the Middle East.
According to Maldives Airports Company Limited, nine flights were cancelled on 28 February, affecting 1,716 passengers. The following day saw 19 additional cancellations, disrupting the travel plans of approximately 3,530 people.
In response, an emergency assistance operation has been activated at Velana International Airport. The initiative is being coordinated by the Visit Maldives Corporation, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, and the airport operator to provide guidance, accommodation and logistical support to stranded passengers.
Tourists were initially given the option to return to their resorts or guesthouses once cancellations began. Others chose to rebook on alternative routes with the help of airlines and tour operators. For passengers who remained at the airport, the former domestic terminal has been opened as a temporary rest area, with essential assistance provided on-site. Authorities confirmed that more than 1,400 travelers have been accommodated at various tourist facilities, while dedicated service counters continue to offer round-the-clock support.
Airlines impacted by the disruptions include Emirates, flydubai, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Gulf Air and Air Arabia.
Officials have advised passengers travelling to or transiting through the Middle East to confirm flight schedules directly with their airlines before heading to the airport and to monitor official updates for the latest information.
Despite the regional instability, airport authorities emphasized that overall operations at Velana International Airport remain functional, with coordination ongoing between government agencies and airline partners to minimize inconvenience and safeguard the country’s tourism sector.
