President Mohamed Muizzu has set up a Special Cabinet Committee to monitor and respond to the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, the President’s Office announced.
Chief Spokesperson Heena Waleed, in a statement shared on X, said the committee was created to coordinate government action and address any challenges that Maldivian citizens or national interests may face as a result of the unrest.
The committee, formed earlier in the day, brings together several key ministries and is chaired by Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel. Its members include the ministers responsible for defence, finance, economic development, transport, homeland security, tourism, higher education and Islamic affairs.
According to the President’s Office, the ministries represented will provide timely updates to the public as developments continue to unfold.
The move comes against a backdrop of sharply heightened tensions in the region. Iranian state media has reported the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, stating he was killed during reported US-Israeli air strikes. In response to the announcement, Iran has declared 40 days of national mourning.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump commented publicly on the developments, describing Khamenei as “one of the most evil people in history” and calling on Iranians to “take back their country.”
Governments worldwide are closely assessing the potential political, security and economic implications of the crisis, including its impact on citizens abroad and global markets.
