President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conducted a site visit to assess the ongoing road improvement works along the northern side of Male’, a project aimed at bringing the roadway up to modern urban standards.
The development is being implemented by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). During the inspection, the President was accompanied by the Minister of Housing, Construction and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, along with senior government officials and top representatives of MTCC.
Officials overseeing the project provided the President with detailed briefings on the current status of construction and the technical aspects of the work underway.
With Phase II approaching its final stages, President Muizzu recently reiterated his commitment to residents of Henveyru ward that redevelopment of the heavily used market zone would be completed ahead of Ramadan. Once finished, the upgraded section will support smooth two-way traffic flow.
Addressing congestion in the capital’s commercial hub, the President noted that the government has initiated road projects outside previously foreign-funded programmes. He explained that widening key roads into dual carriageways is essential to ease traffic pressure, adding that priority has been given to completing the busiest market stretch—from the MPL area to Izzudheen Jetty—before Ramadan.
MTCC reported that subbase works are already in progress, with aggregate base course layering and asphalt paving scheduled to begin this week. Streetlight installation and road marking works are also expected to commence shortly.
The corporation further stated that major preparatory works, including land reclamation, sheet piling and panel installation, have been completed. Essential infrastructure tasks such as cable junction installation and the laying of main water and sewerage lines have also been fully finalised. MTCC expressed confidence that construction in the market area will be wrapped up before Ramadan.
The current works cover a 250-metre segment extending from the Local Market area to the North Harbour, forming part of a broader 1,088-metre corridor running from the Henveyru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbour. Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion while also addressing long-standing flooding problems in the area.
