First Lady Praises STELCO’s Women’s Electrician Programme as a Powerful Driver of Social Transformation

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has praised the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) for launching its pioneering electrician course for women, describing the initiative as a significant step toward reshaping societal norms.

Speaking at the certificate awarding ceremony for the Beginners Electrician Course for Women, the First Lady acknowledged that the field remains an unconventional choice for Maldivian women. However, she stressed that electrical skills are essential—not only for improving household safety but also for enhancing economic empowerment.

She noted that a widespread lack of basic electrical knowledge has contributed to preventable tragedies, including fatal fires caused by electrical shortages. This knowledge gap, she added, also limits the ability of households to adopt cost-saving practices.

“Information released by relevant authorities shows that fires are very often caused by electrical shortages, and there have been incidents where lives were lost simply due to a lack of basic information,” she said.

The First Lady affirmed that equipping women with foundational electrical skills will strengthen home safety, improve energy efficiency, and empower them to make better-informed choices when purchasing electrical appliances—ensuring durability and value.

She described the initiative as one with the potential to spark positive change within families and across the wider community.

The course, conducted in 7 batches was opened to women over 16 years of age , and 116 women completed the course . The closing ceremony was attended by Managing Director of STELCO  Ahmed Samah Shareef and Deputy managing Director Aishath Muzna .

Speaking at the event MD Ahmed Samah Shareef said training women in a sector dominated by women had yielded very good results.
