President returns to Malé after visit to South Ariatholhu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Malé following his tour of the inhabited islands of South Ari Atoll.

As part of the tour, the President visited ten inhabited islands: Dhan’gethi, Dhidhdhoo, Omadhoo, Dhigurah, Maamigili, Mandhoo, Fenfushi, Hangnaameedhoo, Mahibadhoo, and Kun’burudhoo. He met with Island Councils, Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), and institutional heads to discuss community development priorities, while also engaging directly with island residents.

The President was accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from key Government institutions, who updated communities on ongoing and planned development projects.

Several major initiatives were inaugurated during the visit, including the launch of Bank of Maldives ATM services on multiple islands. Key projects commenced during the trip span urbanization, housing, education, health, and wellness sectors. The President reaffirmed his and the Administration’s commitment to delivering sustainable development across the islands.

Here is a list of main announcements made at each island:

ADh. Dhan’gethi

·        Harbour, Land Reclamation, Coastal Protection: President confirmed all three interconnected projects will move forward under MTCC.

·        Education: Agreement signed for 10 new classrooms and a multipurpose hall; existing classrooms to be air-conditioned.

·        Healthcare: Extension of Health Centre to begin once land is cleared.

·        Tourism: US Dollar ATM services to start by early 2026.

·        Sports: Modern football ground to be developed under 2026 Budget.

·        Ceremonies: Foundation stone laid for Fitness & Recreation Centre; groundbreaking for new police post and council secretariat.


ADh. Dhidhdhoo

·        Harbour Channel: President pledged project will start in November to address monsoon difficulties.

·        Water & Sanitation: Concerns raised over stalled projects; Government pledged to resolve.

·        Community Engagement: Council priorities discussed; President assured continued support.


ADh. Omadhoo

·        Lagoon Allocation: Kudadhoo Falhu and lagoons RF1329 & RF1330 formally designated to Omadhoo.

·        Community-led Development: President pledged support for tourism/economic projects on these lagoons.

·        Infrastructure: Agreement signed for multipurpose school hall.

·        Other Projects: Volleyball court, police station, health centre, council secretariat, fitness & recreation centre initiated.

·        Tourism Support: US Dollar ATM to be installed next year; water network project to be resumed.

·        Council Priorities: Erosion control, harbour and channel upgrades, USD ATM, and waste solutions raised.


ADh. Dhigurah

·        Housing: Government to redesign land-use plan for 50 new plots; revisions to be done via public consultation.

·        Additional Development (2026 Budget): Accommodation block for expatriate workers, state-of-the-art football stadium.

·        Ceremonies: Groundbreaking for police post and coastal protection project; inauguration of new Health Centre Office.

·        Agreements: Road development and school upgrading contracts signed.

·        Council Priorities: Road access, harbour upgrades, sports facilities, convention centre, USD ATM, and expanded classrooms.


ADh. Maamigili

·        Education: Agreement signed to establish Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) campus; school upgrade to finish by 2026.

·        Healthcare: 30-bed hospital to be developed by 2026.

·        Infrastructure: Road development project launched; BML branch to open.

·        Waste & Services: Waste management under WAMCO; public works unit to be established.

·        Housing & Sports: Housing project confirmed; sports complex included in 2026 Budget.

·        ID & Passport Services: To commence on island before end of October.

·        Healthcare Reform (Speech): From 2026, direct communication between hospitals and ministries to reduce bureaucracy.

·        Community Concerns: Road delays, harbour issues, need for FADs for fishing, health centre staffing, and more classrooms.


ADh. Mandhoo

·        Top Priority: Construction of 12 classrooms and multipurpose hall at Mandhoo School (work begins Nov 2025; to finish by 2027 academic year).

·        Healthcare: Groundbreaking for new Health Centre building.

·        Sports & Recreation: Groundbreaking of football ground and Fitness & Recreation Centre.

·        Financial Services: BML ATM inaugurated.

·        Engagement: President met council and residents, listening to development needs.


ADh. Fenfushi

·        Water & Sewerage: Stalled projects to be restarted; existing contractor agreements to be terminated.

·        Education: Stalled school construction project to resume in time for next academic year.

·        Ceremonies: Agreements signed for 300-capacity mosque and boatyard development.

·        Other Projects Commenced: New Health Centre, Waste Management Centre, police post, running track, volleyball court, BML ATM.

·        Future Plans: Quay wall construction and funeral house included in mosque plan.

·        Council Priorities: Expediting water/sewage works, additional classrooms for single-session schooling, and mosque funeral facilities.


ADh. Hangnaameedhoo

·        Tourism Expansion: Uthuru Athafaru officially designated to Hangnaameedhoo; Alikoe Rah to be developed as excursion island for local guesthouses.

·        Community Concerns: Harbour upgrades, road drainage, shoreline protection, health centre upgrades, football ground completion.

·        Tourism Operators Meeting: Guesthouse owners raised request for picnic islands; President pledged solutions.

·        New Projects: Coastal protection and boatyard development as an integrated initiative.


ADh. Mahibadhoo

·        Respect Project: Nationwide initiative to revive tradition of mutual respect.

·        Legislative Agenda: 27 bills to be submitted to Parliament; includes constitutional amendment for concurrent elections and anti-corruption reforms.

·        Land Reclamation: 67 hectares reclamation project launched, to be completed in 10 months; housing and hospital projects to follow in 2026.

·        Housing: 150 housing units to start construction under 2026 Budget.

·        Healthcare: 50-bed hospital planned for 2026.

·        Education: All classrooms and staff rooms across Maldives to be air-conditioned by 2026.

·        Sports: Major investment to boost sports sector.

·        National Services: Nationwide rollout of ID card and passport issuance marked in Mahibadhoo.

·        Council Concerns: Waste management, harbour mooring systems, hospital progress, housing, reclamation.


ADh. Kun’burudhoo

·        Major Projects: Agreements signed for land reclamation, harbour development, and new school; all awarded to MTCC.

·        Implementation Timeline: Land reclamation and harbour work to begin November 2025.

·        Housing: Project to be launched in 2026.

·        Tourism & Land Use: Fofalha Gau lagoon designated as part of Kun’burudhoo.
