President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the lack of space in the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport is one of the reasons for the government’s difficulty in opening more opportunities to build and develop resorts.
President made this remark speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the second phase of Hulhumale’ land reclamation project.
President Yameen said that this is a reality that the major stakeholders of the tourism industry accept. “The airport is congested. That is why we are finding it difficult to open opportunities to develop more resorts,” he said.
“Today 1 or 1.4 million people travel from the airport. We have to increase it with 4 or 5 times,” he said.
The President said that the airport will see many developments with the development of the second phase of Hulhumale’ being completed. He said that the government’s aim to bring 6 or 7 million tourists will see progress with the completion of the second phase.
