People should come out to uphold constitution- Ahmed Didi
“Sandhanu” Ahmed Didi has said that the people should come out to uphold and defence the constitution of Maldives.

Former Human Rights Ambassador of the President’s Office, Ahmed Didi made this remark in a press statement he issued yesterday.

He said that he was put behind bars in 1993 for 45 days for stating that the then constitution needs to be amended. He said that the current green constitution came into existence because of the hard work and sacrifices of many people.

“However, the current government is slowly narrowing down the rights ensured in the constitution. They are violating the rights of the people in the name of law. The current bill submitted to the Peoples’ Majlis in the guise of amending the constitution is a violation of the rights of the people,” he said.

Ahmed Didi said that the government is targeting the beloved political leader and economic expert, Gasim Ibrahim. He said that the government is trying hard to close down the doors for Gasim to run for Presidency in the 2018 election.

“Therefore the current Peoples’ Majlis, it is a law making body or a law violating body? Even if a 65 year old runs for Presidency, he will become President when the people elect him. Therefore how can the right to elect be narrowed down? What is the purpose? Is this not stepping on the necks of the people while being their representatives? Let not the members of the Majlis be puppets of certain people,” he said.
