Department of Higher Education has sent the Islamic University bill to the Attorney General’s office for legal advice.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, the Deputy Minister at the Education Ministry, Azleen Ahmed said that the establishment of an Islamic University is from the electoral pledges of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. He said that the government is working to fulfill that pledge as soon as possible.
Azleen said that the bill will be sent to the Peoples’ Majlis as soon as the Attorney General’s Office finishes the bill. He expressed hopes that the Peoples’ Majlis will pass the bill in the first term of the Majlis this year.
“Up until now all universities have been established under a declaration by the President. However the present government wants to pass a law and then establish the Islamic University under that,” he said.
He said that the Department of Education has also sent bills of some private colleges who have requested to be upgraded as universities to the Attorney General’s office.
Azleen said that the requests to open private universities should be thoroughly reviewed by the government. He said that the Department of Higher Education will ensure that the rights of all are preserved when issuing the permit to establish universities.
