Largest airline in Europe to commence flights to Maldives
The largest airline in Europe, Deutsche Lufthansa AG, commonly known as Lufthansa, a flag carrier of Germany is set to commence scheduled flights to Maldives starting coming December.

Maldives Airports Company limited (MACL) revealed this at a press conference held at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) on Wednesday night.

The Managing Director of MACL, Bandhu Ibrahim Saleem revealed that the flights would begin starting December 09th.

He said that direct flights by Lufthansa to Maldives would have a really positive effect on the tourism industry of the country.

Bandhu Saleem added that the amount of tourist arrivals into the country within the previous year increased by 7%.

“Therefore, I believe that this year would be another big year. And a brand new airline bringing in more tourists would have a rather positive effect on the industry," Saleem said.

Speaking at the press conference, Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Adeeb stated that such decisions have a lot of hard work behind them. He added that one of the reasons why INIA was taken back from GMR was to increase the number of airlines which fly to the Maldives.

"Lufthansa had operated chartered flights to the Maldives in the past. However, this is the first time that they are starting scheduled flights to the country. In addition to this, we are doing much more to promote the tourism of Maldives. As a part of this, Maldives would participate at the ITB fair being held during March of every year in Germany," Minister Adeeb revealed.

Lufthansa is set to operate two direct flights per week starting December 09th.
