Commissioner of Police, Hussein Waheed has said that he believes that adequate measures should be taken against people driving under the influence of drugs.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Commissioner of Police Hussein Waheed said that many fatal and dangerous accidents have happened because of driving under the influence. He said that this is a matter of great concern.
“We have always stated that Maldives is the only country in the world where there is no punishment in the law for those who drive under the influence. In Maldives it is expected that the people will not use drugs because it is forbidden in the religion and also by law. However, people are still doing it. Therefore, we should make and take adequate action and measures against them,” he said.
Hussein Waheed said that it is not enough just to conclude that the person who drives under the influence drove against the law when the driver has caused a fatal accident.
He said that this will not resolve the damages caused and the wrong done. He said that taking action only for breaking the law is done only in trivial issues not for causing fatal or dangerous accidents.
He said that a person uses drugs on his own will and he should take the full responsibility for driving while he was under the influence.
“It is not enough just to say that a person drove beyond the speed limit because he was under the influence. He should take full responsibility for his own action,” he said.
