Former Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis Abdulla Shahid has said that today the constitutional powers are being shifted to one person instead of demarcating them in accordance to democratic system of governance.
Former Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis Abdulla Shahid made this remark in an interview to local news media, VNews.
During the interview, Shahid said that the power of constitution that has been built since the beginning of 2000, has been silently converged on to one person.
He added that the power carefully built by the residents of Maldives have been lost. He said that 2014 was a tragic year for democracy and stated that the constitution has lost a lot of it's power and that the rights of many residents have been lost.
In addition to this, Shahid also stressed that it is very concerning that one person is collecting power behind the scenes of a democracy, and that the voice of the common folks must be heard.
