Maldives Police Service has said that the MMPRC embezzlement was carried out with the knowledge and assistance of senior government officials.
Police Service made this statement while speaking at the Financial Committee of the parliament today.
MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa of Hanimaadhoo constituency said that the MMPRC embezzlement was the largest corruption scandal in Asia in recent history. He said that the whole state was involved in it. “Bank of Maldives took part in it. The 18th parliament took part in it. ACC and the Auditor General’s office took part in it” said Ghafoor.
Ghafoor said that the police were also aware of it but they couldn’t stop it because the president, vice-president and some MPs were involved in it. He said that in such a situation there is nothing the police can do.
“Today I request the police to conduct an investigation in this matter. Parliament members also took part in it. I request to investigate everyone who took part in it” said Ghafoor.
Police official who attended the hearing said that they investigated the cases and sent it to PG office in late 2016.
