Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has said that foreign expatriates will not be able to work as cashiers in cafes, restaurants, shops and other places from April 1st of 2015.
In a press conference held at Nasandhura Palace Hotel, Minister Saeed said that the issuing of the quota - to bring expatriates into the country to work as cashiers - will be stopped starting from Thursday.
He said that the ministry is scheduled to send its employees to such areas for monitoring. Results will be determined based on the survey.
The Minister noted that the ministry has been receiving numerous complaints regarding the expatriates working as cashiers in several areas, adding that if their posts were given to the Maldivians, there would be about 5,000 to 7,000 available jobs.
Minister Saeed added that the the number of unemployed Maldivian youths in the country is considerably high, and that the initiative will enable those youths employment without having to move away from their family and native island.
