Acting Minister of Health, Minister of Defence Mohamed Nazim has said that the ministry will be submitting a Thalassemia control bill.
He said that he believes that controlling thalassemia is an individual responsibility upon all. He said that this bill will be submitted to the Majlis in the hopes to resolve this issue.
Nazim said that the bill includes how two Thalassemia carriers can marry.
Speaking at the ceremony held to open the bed ward of the Thallasemia center, Minister Nazim said that thalassemia like diseases are controlled by taking such measures even in other countries.
He said that Thalassemia patients were controlled through law.
Minister Nazim said that the policy of the government is to take the necessary precautions before catching a disease.
Thalasaemia is a group of inherited autosomal recessive blood disorders that originated in the Mediterranean region. In thalassemia the genetic defect, which could be either mutation or deletion, results in reduced rate of synthesis or no synthesis of one of the globin chains that make up hemoglobin.
