Those who catch protected marine species are to be fined MVR 10 million.
In a press conference held at the Fisheries Ministry, the Senior Research Officer of the ministry Adam Ziyad said that the ministry has made some decisions on the measures to be taken regarding those who attack protected marine species.
He said that he ministry also consulted the Attorney General for legal advice regarding the matter.
Adam Ziyad said that the Attorney General’s Office advices to gazette the guidelines.
He said that those who catch and attack protected marine species will be fined MVR 10 million once the guidelines are implemented.
Regarding recent disturbing images of cruelty against Marine Turtles shared on social media, Adam Ziyad said that such issues will be regarded as a crime and will be sent to the Prosecutor General’s office by Maldives Police Service.
He said that the Ministry currently does not have any legal power to take any such action.
