The speaker and the deputy speaker will be elected in the first session. The session will be chaired by MP Ahmed Shiyam as he has served as an MP the longest.
So far six candidates have expressed their interest in running for the position. They are MP Aslam of Hithadhoo north constituency, Hassan Afeef the MP elect for Villifushi constituency, Ali Azim the MP for Central Henveryu Constituency, MP Ibrahim Shareef the MP for Maradhoo constituency and MP Rozainaa the MP for Meedhoo constituency.
Meanwhile former President Nasheed has publicly supported MP Aslam while President Solih has stated that MP elect Afeef is the most suitable person for the position.
