Sheikh Moosa Nizar, the Keyodhoo constituency MP has said that it is not fair to take taxes only from the poor people.
He said that GST is also taken from the poor alone and the burden of the increase in the import duties are also taken by the poor.
Sheikh Moosa Nizar noted that the rich in the Maldives usually buy their goods from abroad except a few essentials.
“Therefore regardless of the increase in the import duties the rich people won’t be concerned. They will not bother as they still get the goods cheap. They also do not have to pay GST because they do not buy what they need from Maldives,” he said.
He said that this problem will be only resolved by taking income taxes from the wealthy.
“I support taking income taxes from the wealth. Income tax should be taken from them,” he said.
He said that the main aim of every government should be to provide happiness and prosperity to the people.
