The parliament of the Maldives has passed the bill on giving special privileges to retired judges.
The bill was submitted to the parliament by MP Riyaz Rasheed. In today’s session 25 members voted to pass the bill while 20 members voted against it. Meanwhile 5 members abstained from voting.
The bill states that the judges who were in those positions up until Maldives adopted the new constitution, should be granted special privileges. Hence the former Chief Justice of the Maldives Mohamemd Rasheed Ibrahim will also be eligible for these privileges by the state.
Previously MP Eva Abdullah stated that the incoming parliament will repeal this bill.
