Thoddoo constituency MP, Ibrahim Hassan has said that the MPs are tirelessly working to indirectly cement the government and protect the leaders of this government from within the Peoples’ Majlis.
Speaking at yesterday’s sitting of the Majlis, Ibrahim Hassan said that the MPs are making amendments to the constitution in this regard even when it is in clear violation of the constitution and democratic values.
“The hidden agenda is to protect the government. The constitution states that the members should be guided in their actions by considerations of national interest and public welfare foremost, and should not exploit their official positions in any way for their own benefit or for the benefit of those with whom they have special relations. They shall represent not only their constituencies but the country as a whole,” he said.
Ibrahim Hassans said that the rights of the members is to protect and implement the constitution.
Ibrahim Hassan supported the amendment to the Land Act proposed in the Majlis yesterday, tabled on behalf of the Government by Hon. Ahmed Rasheed, MP for Gaddhhoo. The amendment was passed with 58 votes in favour.
There were 3 votes against and 1 abstentions. 13 Members spoke on the Bill during time allocated for debate at yesterday’s Sitting.
The Committee Report on the Bill was presented to the Majlis floor by Deputy Chair of the Committee on National Development, Hon. Mohamed Ismail, MP for Hoarafushi. The Bill was sent for Committee review on 15 December 2014, at the Twenty Seventh Sitting of the Third Session of the Majlis.
