MP for Mahibadhoo constituency Ahmed Thaariq (Tom) has a requested to summon Defence Minister Mariya Didi to the parliament for questioning regarding the statements she made about the defence capabilities of Maldives while speaking to Strategic News International a media outlet based in India.
Speaking to SNI during her recent visit to India, Mariya said that the Indian military is very powerful and that they can take over Maldives anytime they wished to do so.
Mariya has received criticism from many people over these statements. Many people including former ambassadors and prominent politicians have called for her resignation.
Defence Minister of the Maldives issued a statement regarding the matter saying that people were twisting what she said in order to score political points.
Defence Minister Mariya Didi will be the second Minister to be summoned from the current administration. MP Abdullah Rifaau (Bochey) has also requested to summon Housing Minister Athifa regarding the change in regulations the ministry plans to implement in allocating social housing units.
