President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that every Maldivian should accept the Jihad and sacrifices of as-Sulṭaan al-Ghaazee Muhamadhu Thakurufaanu al-A'uẓam also known as Bodu Thakurufaanu with gratitude.
President Yameen made this remark in his message to the people of Maldives on the occasion of the 71st National Day of Maldives.
The President highlighted the great sacrifice made by Bodu Thakurufaanu, the national hero the day commemorates, to change the living standards of the people, to bring an end to the distressing situation, and to establish justice and stability among the people.
President Yameen noted that Bodu Thakurufaanu was a shining example of patriotism, who succeeded in achieving the people’s dreams, serving the country honestly, sincerely, and loyally.
He said that all should reflect the lessons learnt from marking the National Day, by putting national interests ahead of their personal interests, in resolving the challenges faced by the country.
He added that the nation’s independence and sovereignty must not be compromised while facing major challenges, and has called on all citizens to consider protecting and upholding the Islamic faith and Maldivian nationhood as their foremost duty.
In addition to that, the President stated that the nation could remain steadfast in its Islamic faith, and retain its unity only by determining the real issues affecting it and working towards development in a cohesive fashion.
