Elections Commission of the Maldives have stated that former Vice President Adheeb cannot become the president of Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD).
The Elections Commission made this statement after the council of MTD appointed Adheeb as their president. EC stated that since Adheeb is still serving jail sentence, he cannot become the president of any party.
Speaking to the press after MTD’s first council meeting, the deputy president of MTD, Ismail Asif said that the council made the decision to appoint Adheeb after getting legal counsel. He said that the law does not say that someone serving a jail sentence cannot hold a position during the interim period of the party.
However EC stated that, people who are serving jail sentences cannot assume any positions in a political party other than being an ordinary member.
