Parliament removes the age limit for presidency !

Parliament of the Maldives has removed the age limit on presidency. During President Yameen’s administration, the constitutional provision on age regarding the office of the president and vice president was amended. Previously to qualify for the office, the candidate must bet above the age of 35. However it was change to 30 and an age ceiling of 65 was added.

Parliament removed the age ceiling last night. A total of 72 members voted to pass the amendment.

Many believed that during President Yameen’s administration the amendment was made to prevent President Maumoon and Qasim Ibrahim from competing in elections. During the campaign President Yameen indicated that he was behind amendment.
